Artifact by Printmakers Circle on display in the Gallery 16th November 2019- 12th January 2020
Join us on Saturday 16th November 2-4pm for the opening event.
Printmakers Circle is a group of professional artists based in North Yorkshire, who embrace original printmaking in a wide variety of different ways.
This exhibition sheds light on a breadth of printmaking techniques, both traditional and contemporary, and features the group’s latest print exchange.
A ‘portfolio exchange’ or ‘print exchange’ is a printmaking tradition that speaks to the medium’s democratic and collaborative nature.
The theme of ‘Artifact’ representing the notion of a manmade cultural object, reflecting and inspired by the rich heritage of arts, culture and landscape around Yorkshire, has been used for two group exchanges, with members exchanging an editioned print with each other. “A print is the halfway point between a thing and a thought” as wood engraver Fritz Eichenberg once said.
These exchange prints are creating a valuable archive for the group, showing often rawness and experimentation not always seen in larger works. The box sets allow a close inspection of prints not behind glass, seeing a more intimate journey of creation in these busy days of digital imaging – a rare and precious thing.
Each artist receives a beautiful box of everyone’s prints; the number one from each set is framed, so it can be exhibited, and a couple of spares sets are also available for sale.
Printmakers circle are accompanied by a selection of work by talented jewellers and silversmiths. Work pictured by Printmakers Circle.
