Construct: The 62 Group of Textile Artists

20th July 2019 @ 10:00 am - 15th September 2019 @ 3:00 pm

The 62 Group of Textile Artists is an artist-led group with an international reputation for professionalism and high-quality work. Its aim is to question and challenge the boundaries of textile practice and to encourage a greater awareness of the art form. The membership is worldwide and consists of approximately 60 exhibiting members, both established artists with an international reputation and recent graduates.

In this exhibition members build and assemble ambitious and innovative textile works responding to the theme CONSTRUCT.

CONSTRUCT:

1. to put together substances or parts systematically; build; assemble;
2. to frame mentally (an argument, sentence etc.);
3. geom. to draw (a line, angle, or figure) so that certain requirements are satisfied;
4. something formulated or built systematically;
5. a complex idea resulting from a synthesis of simpler ideas.

The theme CONSTRUCT offers a rich seam to mine for inspiration.

In this exhibition artworks have been built using a diverse range of materials and structural forms, and the textile techniques used by 62 Group members reads like the Richard Serra Verb List: braiding, casting, collaging, crocheting, cutting, felting, folding, knitting, knotting, patching, piecing, pleating, printing, quilting, salting, smocking, soaking, starching, stitching, tufting, weaving, wrapping.

More cerebral interpretations have tapped into the construction of ideas, emotions, arguments and narratives.

Other works have been inspired by the built environment and architecture: how it may be mapped, the materials from which it is made, and how it could be in the future. Ideas of de-construct and re-construct have also been explored: unpicking, unravelling, fragmenting, remaking, reimagining, emergence.

Several artists have referenced the Mill building and the textile heritage of the site.

CONSTRUCT has enjoyed a wealth of inspirational impulses, and resulted in diverse work that is ambitious, complex and innovative.
