Furniture Upcycling Workshop (Full Day) 1st March

1st March 2020 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

£95

Come and join Done Up North for a fun Sunday workshop where you can bring an old, tired piece of furniture along and take home a beautiful newly upcycled creation at the end, as well as the confidence to fly solo and tackle more upcycling projects!

You’ll learn the process from start to finish to get a long-lasting professional result on all my own pieces. Which basically means Done Up North will short cut you past the pitfalls and mistakes it’s easy to make when you’re starting out so you can get on and simply enjoy the process of transforming your piece into something amazing!

You’ll find out how to create exciting new striking looks with creative paint colour choices, sparkling metallics accents, eye-catching geometric designs as well how enhance the natural wood grain of your piece too as Done Up North does in many of her designs for her clients.

You will prep and tackle any repairs needed before going through the techniques to paint with a really smooth, contemporary finish and then you will work on enhancing the piece with geometric designs using masking tape, which under Nicky’s guidance & using her tried-and-tested methods you’ll see can be so simple to do but oh so effective and distinctive! We’ll end with a look at finishes such as top coat, wax and oil to enhance or protect your piece.

What’s included
All materials, tools and protective wear (aprons, masks, gloves etc) will be provided.
You will get an project pack with Nicky’s in-depth upcycling guide to take home.
Snacks and refreshments will be available right throughout the day.

What to bring:
You simply need to bring a small unpainted piece of furniture to work on such as a side table or bedside cabinet. Nicky will be able to suggest places to try if you need help to find something and we can chat about the piece and possible designs in the run up to the workshop.

(Larger items are fine to bring if you are happy to do plain paint finish with no geometric design or you might choose to focus on doing up just one part of the piece to allow you to experience a bit of everything!)
Any replacement items you wish to add to your piece such as handles or lining paper.

On the workshop you’ll be working with Fusion Mineral Paint, which is pretty much the furniture painters favourite furniture paint these days now that fashions are moving away from chalk paint. It’s a specialist furniture paint that gives a beautiful matt finish and is so lovely and easy to work with but is hard-wearing and requires no top coat at all to be durable. It is made from natural ingredients so is non-toxic, lead free, virtually odourless and has no volatile organic compounds (VOC) meaning it’s kinder to the environment as well as us. You’ll get a chance to use some of the 50 different colours as well as all of the amazing metallic paints in their range.

You’ll also get a chance to work with General Finishes – the award winning wood-working brand who produce the best quality stains and hardest wearing finishes to enhance and protect your projects.

There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get advice for your projects while you are painting too.

A relaxing area is available to eat a packed lunch during the day and take breaks.

There are also places to eat and and buy food to bring back to the Studios at Sunny Bank Mills – it’s a lovely destination in its own right with plenty of parking.

Top floor spinning mill, free parking, lift access, accessible toilet in spinning mill lobby.

No experience is necessary and all abilities are welcome. This workshop is for ages 16 and over.
