Workshop – Your Life Story in Comics

£5 bookable through Eventbrite

A introductory and practical workshop into graphic memoir / comics about the everyday hosted by Louise Crosby, from the LDComics Team

This session will begin with a brief illustrated presentation of the possibilities of the comics form and how it can be used to tell autobiographical stories. She will also show examples of graphic memoirs.

Then there will be a chance to try it out for yourself, through a few practical exercises. No drawing experience or knowledge of comics is required to participate, as the tasks will be suitable for both beginners and those with more drawing experience.

The tasks will be followed by some brief ideas for next steps, such as information for further courses, further reading, competitions, how comics artists start to sell their work and other suggestions for further developing your comic.

Paper and some basic drawing materials will be provided. But if you would prefer to bring your own drawing equipment or sketch book, then please do.

About LDC

LDC, previously ‘Laydeez do Comics’ was launched in July 2009 by Nicola Streeten and Sarah Lightman. An unincorporated voluntary organisation, set up to champion comics work, based on life narrative and the drama of the everyday.

Artists, academics, publishers and fans from around the world are invited to give illustrated talks at LDC meetings. The evenings are an inclusive platform for people to test new works and ideas. Emerging artists present their work alongside more established practitioners, in an inspiring and friendly atmosphere.

LDC is now the largest women-led comics forum in the UK. Presently there are LDC groups in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, London and several other cities both in the UK and beyond. They also hold additional LDC ‘pop-up’ events at comics and arts festivals.

Our Mission: To change the world through the medium of comics

We aim to…

1. Provide a platform for comic creators to test new works & ideas within a social context, spotlighting narratives that give new perspectives on the real dramas of the everyday, in particular of an autobiographical nature.

2. Celebrate & raise the standards, expertise & representation of female-identifying graphic novelists (in a historically white-male dominated space).

3. Build a friendly community to compliment the solitude of comic creation, boosting mental health & creating networking opportunities in the process.

4. Re-define the mainstream concept of ‘comics’ in the UK.

5. Champion feminist leadership as the first women-led comics’ forum in the UK.

Our Vision:We want to inspire you to create and we believe the medium of comics is a wonderful, accessible way to do that.

In the future, we want to see:

• A thriving, supportive LDC community in every city

• A rise in the professionalism of comic artists.

• More stories, memoirs, essays & anecdotes in the comic form.

• More women being published and acknowledged at comic panels & awards.

• A change in the way comics are perceived in society (for example, getting graphic memoirs out of the sci-fi / manga section in bookshops and into its rightful place as a biography).
